Pace controls heat production
Muscular work creates heat. A fast climb in mild sunshine can produce more internal load than a gentle walk on a hotter day. Set a pace that can be sustained without repeated surges.

Begin normally hydrated. Carry enough water for the route and credible delays, with a treatment plan for approved sources. Make bottles accessible. Drink according to conditions and established health guidance, avoiding both neglect and forced excessive intake.
Food replaces some electrolytes during ordinary activity. Longer, intense sweating may justify an appropriate electrolyte plan, but needs vary. Products should be mixed as directed. Highly concentrated drinks may upset the stomach and are not automatically better.

Recognise heat cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke
Heat-related illness exists on a spectrum, and labels can overlap. Early symptoms may include heavy sweating, weakness, headache, nausea, dizziness, irritability, cramps or reduced coordination. Stop activity, move to a cooler place, loosen excess clothing and begin appropriate cooling. Seek medical advice when symptoms are significant, persistent or uncertain.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Altered mental state, confusion, collapse, seizure or unconsciousness in a hot environment demands immediate emergency services and rapid active cooling according to current first aid guidance. Do not delay cooling while waiting for transport.
The U.S. National Weather Service advises moving a person with suspected heat stroke to a cooler environment, calling emergency services and using cool wet cloths or a cool bath while avoiding fluids for someone who is not fully alert. Follow local emergency instructions.

Create a buddy observation routine
People are poor judges of their own decline. Pair group members and use brief checks at natural pauses:

- Has the person's pace changed unexpectedly?

- Is water still accessible and being used?

Keep private health information private, but encourage participants to disclose relevant concerns to the responsible leader before the activity. A supportive culture makes early reporting easier.
Vehicles and enclosed spaces add risk
A parked vehicle heats rapidly, even when outside conditions seem moderate. Never leave a person or animal inside. Metal storage spaces, tents with poor airflow and small sheds can also become dangerously hot.
Ventilation reduces heat, but running engines or combustion appliances create carbon monoxide risk. Never use a vehicle, generator or stove in a way that violates safety instructions. Heat and carbon monoxide symptoms can overlap, so move to fresh air and seek emergency help when exposure is possible.
Night movement is not automatically safer
Cooler darkness can reduce heat load, but it introduces navigation, visibility, wildlife, traffic and fatigue concerns. If night travel is appropriate and lawful, prepare lighting, reflective visibility for public roads, route markers and communication.

A training schedule should distinguish physical work from learning objectives. Navigation theory does not require a group to stand in direct sun. Equipment demonstrations can happen in shade. Repetitive practical stations can rotate so no one remains exposed continuously.

- Early movement during the coolest window.
- A shaded hydration and status check.
- Low-output instruction during rising heat.
- A longer rest during the peak period.
- A short final activity only if conditions and participants remain suitable.

After the route
Cooling and hydration continue after movement stops. Move into shade, remove unnecessary equipment and eat and drink normally. A person can feel worse after the finish, especially if the last effort was intense.
Watch for persistent headache, vomiting, confusion, fainting or unusual weakness and seek appropriate care. Replace soaked clothing and address sunburn or friction problems.
