  • the exact sock combination;

Socks are part of the fit

Socks manage friction, cushioning and moisture, but more thickness is not always better. An overly thick sock can make a correctly sized boot too tight. Compression reduces blood flow and places new pressure on toes.

Merino blends are popular because they balance comfort, moisture management and odour control. Synthetic socks can be durable and quick to dry. Cotton retains moisture and often becomes a poor option for long wet or cold movement.

Some people prefer a thin liner sock beneath a hiking sock so movement occurs between fabrics rather than against skin. Others find that the additional layer creates bunching. Test it personally.

Carry a dry spare pair in a protected bag. On a long wet day, changing socks can improve comfort even if footwear remains damp. Rotate and air the removed pair when weather permits.

Lacing is a field adjustment

Laces do more than keep a boot attached. They control heel hold, forefoot space and pressure across the instep. A single tightness from toe to ankle may not suit the whole foot.

If toes feel compressed, reduce tension over the forefoot while preserving heel security. If the heel lifts, a heel-lock pattern may help, provided it does not create pressure at the ankle. On long descents, secure the foot before repeated toe impact begins. After an hour of swelling, recheck the entire pattern.

Do not pull laces tighter in response to numbness without investigating. Numbness can indicate excessive pressure. Stop, remove the footwear and check the foot.

Carry a spare lace or a compatible repair option. A broken lace may be temporarily managed, but a route that depends on secure footwear deserves a real backup.

Moisture changes the skin

Wet skin becomes softer and more vulnerable to friction. Moisture can come from rain, stream crossings, sweat or water entering over the cuff. A waterproof membrane may keep outside water away but also slow drying and retain internal humidity.

Use ventilation and pace to control sweat. On breaks, remove footwear and socks when conditions make that safe. Let skin and fabric air, clear debris and inspect the feet. In cold weather, do not allow feet to chill during a long stop, and keep dry socks reserved.

Gaiters can block snow, rain and grit, yet they also trap warmth. Select height and material for the surface rather than wearing them automatically. Ensure rain trousers overlap footwear in a way that directs water outward.

At camp, remove damp socks, clean the feet and allow them to dry. Protect sleeping insulation from wet footwear. If boots may freeze, loosen them and arrange them so they remain usable, without placing them near unsafe heat.

Learn the first signals of a hot spot

A hot spot is a local area of warmth, irritation or rubbing that often precedes a blister. It may feel too minor to justify stopping, which is precisely why people ignore it. Ten minutes later the problem is larger.

Use a simple rule: stop at the first repeated sensation in the same place. Remove the boot and sock. Check for grit, a fold, moisture, damaged skin or a pressure edge. Dry the area and correct the cause.

Depending on personal training and product instructions, a clean friction-reducing patch, blister dressing or tape may protect intact skin. Apply it smoothly with no wrinkles. Adhesive does not compensate for a stone, bad lacing or wet sock, so deal with those first.

If a group normalises early foot stops, the total delay is usually smaller than dealing with a severe blister later.

Blister care starts with protection

An intact blister forms a protective roof over damaged tissue. Avoid opening it casually. Protect it from further friction and pressure with an appropriate dressing, then adjust footwear. Large, painful, blood-filled, infected or complicated blisters deserve professional guidance, particularly for anyone with diabetes, reduced sensation or circulation problems.

If a blister opens on its own, use clean hands, follow current first aid guidance, keep the remaining skin protected where appropriate and cover it with a suitable sterile dressing. Monitor for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or worsening pain.

A field kit should contain supplies you know how to use and that fit the group's needs. Check adhesive performance, packaging integrity and expiry dates. Training matters more than a collection of unfamiliar products.

Nails and skin need routine maintenance

Trim toenails before a demanding route, leaving them neat rather than extremely short. Sharp corners can catch neighbouring toes, while long nails may strike the front of a boot during descent. Do not perform aggressive nail work immediately before departure if it risks creating tender skin.

Manage calluses carefully. A moderate callus can be protective, but very thick or cracked skin creates its own problems. Gradual care is better than removing a large amount at once. Moisturise dry skin during normal life, but avoid making the feet slippery immediately before walking.

Clean between toes and dry thoroughly. Treat suspected fungal conditions with appropriate professional or pharmacy guidance before they spread through a long trip or shared facilities.

Foot care begins with the rucksack

After the route
